Re: Disable firewall

I don't believe that the firewall is the problem. Go to the terminal and key sudo ufw status and you will see the status of your firewall. I suspect that the problem is related to either Samba or a parameter in VLC. So, my suggestion is that you do not pursue the firewall approach, in spite of the r...

Re: Several general questions about Point linux

@Stefan: After trying many other distributions for several years, I have been using Point Linux for over a year and I am completely satisfied with it. To try to answer your questions: 1. Point Linux is not based on Ubuntu or any Ubuntu derivatives, in fact, Point Linux and Ubuntu are both based dire...

Re: Kazam

@amtrakuk - One suggestion that you might try is a program in the repositories named guvcview
recordmydesktop was an audio fail for me also, but guvcview picked up video and audio just fine. Give it a try and let us know how it worked out for you.

Re: Save or Open

@Jordan: Thanks for checking that out. Gmail would be a satisfactory solution for me in Firefox, and Chromium works fine with either AOL mail or Gmail, but my preference is Firefox with AOL mail. To compound the problem, my wife uses a Yahoo web mail account, and I have been unable to convince her t...

Re: Save or Open

I'd like to add that I am now certain that the trouble is Firefox related. I just cranked up the Chromium browser, opened the problem web mail, and it worked perfectly! So, now that I have isolated the cause, maybe I or someone else can follow that direction to find exactly how to fix it.

Re: Save or Open

@Jordan: You are so right in that observation about Gmail. In fact, the entire Google experience is at a different level than I have worked with. I have a couple of friends who ventured in the Chromebook arena, and after gaining some experience with it, they both say they will never go back to their...

Re: Save or Open

@Jordan: Thanks for your suggestion. I followed your instructions, both ways to the letter, and NO success. Stubborn problem!

Re: Save or Open

@Pry: To answer your question, I have a Thunderbird account (which works fine, NO problems), but I also have two web mail accounts (Gmail and AOL), and neither one will handle the problem that I have described, because they are accessed with Firefox, and I believe that is the source of the problem.

Save or Open

When I receive an email using web mail in Firefox containing an attachment which is a .jpg, .pdf, .pps, or .wmv, I always get the option to either open the attachment with the appropriate program or save it to my hard drive. This choice does not appear whenever the attachment is a .doc file, only th...

Re: Let's see your Point Linux MATE desktop!

And here I come, even later, to add another resizing program to the mix. My favorite has been caja-image-converter in the repositories, a very slick and simple photo resizing program. After installing, just right click on an image and the resizing option appears. You can select a size, or scale it, ...
