I have no experience in Linux encryption applications so my question is, what is the best Debian tool and what can you suggest for file encryption (preferred from repository). basically I want to keep some files (for example with passwords or with personal data) in encrypted form in dropbox director...

There are two reasons: Debian is conservative about new versions. Browser is one of the key apps so people should get the latest here. Another reason is that Firefox is a very recognizable brand. and there is second plugin - caja-terminal. very useful if you want to open terminal exactly in the directory you are looking at.
