V3.0b1 from Mate 1.6.0 to Mate 1.8.1

V3.0b1 from Mate 1.6.0 to Mate 1.8.1

Postby jenom » 26 Aug 2014, 14:49

I am testing Point Linux v3.0b1 debian jessie with mate desktop
to my surprise it has mate 1.6.0, while the latest version of mate is 1.8.1

found this instruction on forum for mate upgrade:

Open up Terminal and type:

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install debian-backports
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

Would this upgrade mate to 1.8.1 ?
Should the upgrading of desktop be done from logging out from desktop, not just in it's terminal window ?
If yes, how ?
Thanks!

firstly, the said instruction is for Point 2, not 3 I suppose. the mechanism presented in the instruction adds backports (for wheezy) repository and changes pinning (backported packages over point ones). so it doesn't work for Point 3. there is no debian-backports package/script. if you want to upgrade you should find repository with mate and add it to sources.list file. then update and dist-upgrade all (the procedure is slightly different for backports without pinning).

Point 3 is rather old one (mate 1.6 was the newest at the time) and only first beta for testing. as far as I know Peter is working on the newer version, so if you do not mind, wait a while.

going back to mate I think 1.4 is the best version, or at least the number of bugs is much lower than in newer versions. I must say I haven't seen the newest mate in any other distro working properly as a whole. always something is not working or malfunctioning - x-windows, mozzo, bluetooth etc.

it seems like the best to do is wait until another Point comes out
hopefully it will have newer mate (1.8.X) and newer kernel (3.14.x) too
thanks for the info

remember, we are talking on Point 3. But you can try with Point 2. the said procedure (might be also done during installation by checking the backports box) adds the newest kernel and the newest mate from wheezy-backports repository.
