home folder fails to open

The last couple of days, when I click on my home folder item on the Places menu, instead of opening my home folder it launches the GDebi Package Installer resulting in a a dialogue box stating:

Could not open 'myhomefoldername'. The package might be corrupted or you are not allowed to open the file; please check the permissions of the file.

It doesn't seem to be a permissions problem - just the home folder menu item pointing to the GDebi installer instead of the home folder. No idea how or why that came about. Perhaps after a package update?

Not sure how to get it back to doing what it should either.

Any ideas, suggestions, even commiserations, appreciated.

try to find ~/.local/share/applications/mimeapps.list. some extra associations (for caja I presume) might be added here.

cheers,

Yes, found it, here is the complete text:

[Default Applications]
application/x-bzip-compressed-tar=gdebi.desktop
inode/directory=gdebi.desktop

[Added Associations]
application/x-bzip-compressed-tar=gdebi.desktop;
inode/directory=gdebi.desktop;

Now if I could only understand what it means, is the re a problem, and if yes how to fix it! Thanks for the first clue, suggestion.

problem solved. delete all. you can also delete the file. my file look as follows
Code: Select all
[Default Applications]
image/png=mirage.desktop

[Added Associations]

because I added one association to open png files with mirage.

in your case if you do not change the content of the said file and if you intend to start either caja or compress you start gdebi instead.

cheers,

Yes, that was simple enough. Thanks for that. Back to normal. Still wonder how the file got corrupted in the first place (as well as how anyone can remember where all the files are to control various aspects of a desktop - it's a skill I can't seem to master).

practice makes perfect. longer use one distro easier can identify the problem. and there is our forum. of course not all problems are solved immediately.

pls check the problem solved (in post title)
