gstreamer0.10-tools missing

gstreamer0.10-tools missing

Postby denis_p » 25 Jan 2014, 10:43

Hello,

and sorry if this is not the right place to report.
I just noticed that caja sound previews don't work : gstreamer0.10-tools package should be included in Point Linux to have it work
(cf. https://github.com/mate-desktop/caja/issues/12)
NB : This is with Point Linux Full 2.2 i386, maybe it is already fixed in next Point Linux release ?
Regards,

Denis

Hello there! :)

In fact it can be fixed in PL 2 as well... ;)

On the other hand, how many people want that as it's a doubtful feature IMO.

At least, it's a very useful feature for me !
I have quite a lot of meetings recordings, not alway knowing which one is which, and simply moving the pointer above files to ear a few words of each one helps quickly find the one I'm looking for.

For you, but probably not for the most of us. ;) You know what to install so it is not a problem for you to add this feature.

I can live without it. What I do not like about the audio preview is that one can accidentally hover a mouse over an audio file when it is least expected (at work for instance). I'd like to see what other people think about it.

It's up to you pry, you're the boss !
But I think it is a matter of consistency : as soon as a feature is provided, it should work.
Whether or not it should be removed is another question, that should be seen with Mate devs.
(maybe they should add an option to disable sound previews in caja preferences)

Provided by whom? It works if you install gstreamer0.10-tools package. I absolutely see no problem here.

It's just that you see a black arrow appearing when mouse is over the file, and nothing happens, which can make the user wonder what it is for.
Maybe mate devs should make that arrow not appear when gstreamer0.10-tools is not installed.
Anyway, I won't fight for that, let's close the discussion !

Thank you denis-p for bringing up this topic and letting us know that we need the gstreamer0.10-tools package in order to have this function.
I am digitizing spiritual talks from 50 year old Reel to Reel tapes to mp3's so they can be saved for all time and this function is VERY IMPORTANT to me as well.
To pry, please leave this topic up so that other's like us can find it.

Thank you both,

Bill
