I promise you'll see MATE 1.8 in the next Point Linux 3.0 Beta build. Waiting for the MATE 1.8 to be released was actually one of the reasons why the next beta was delayed.

I've read the news but couldn't find any positive information. changes are mainly minor and cosmetic. thinking about desktops I'm more and more convinced mate is dead end. taking functionality into account, all is the same, progress is minimal. and quality is getting lower (1.4 vs 1.6). I wasn't able to run 1.8 version since there is not present at repositories yet (I've added mate main repo). maybe I'm wrong but what about switching Point to xfce (seems to be more mature).

cheers,

Dead end in what way? The Mate desktops allready rocks and not need many big changes. About 1.8 the Debian packages are not ready yet, there are testing packages, add this repo: deb http://repo.mate-desktop.org/archive/1.8/debian/ wheezy main

And about switching to XFCE? Nope, I think not a good idea because Mate is still a lot better then XFCE (but that is my opinion).
