it's impossible to remove only sound icon. it's so called notification area. on the left there is double doted vertical line. use right mousekey over the line to remove all that area.

cheers,

imo the best thing you can do is a complete reinstall, i know it's not the answer to solve you're problem but you will have a clean system with normal icons.
b.t.w. what iso do you use the core edition are the full edition?

Try to reset your session sesstings :

In your home folder, delete hidden files .config/dconf/user and .cache/dconf/user

Then restart your session.

please reinstall pointlinux-mate-desktop metapackage. It looks like newly installed packages removed some deps.
Code: Select all
sudo apt-get install --reinstall pointlinux-mate-desktop

Right, Mate use gsettings with 1.6 versions (cf http://mate-desktop.org/blog/2013-04-02 ... index.html).

Well, I couldn't get anything to work... :( and actually ALL of my status icons disappeared.(if i click in the right spot they still work, i just cant see them!)
But I greatly appreciate all of the input, and everyone was so quick with their suggestions too.
since I don't really have anything on this comp yet, I'm DL'ing and making a install/rescue usb hdd. (all fresh and clean like!)
I think that I'm gonna upgrade from 1GB to 2 RAM and install a PCI-E video card I have.

I will post in this thread when it's done. (Probably tomorrow.)

Thanx Guys!

I didn't have to reinstall either!
I did the RAM+VGA upgrade, but the usb hdd didn't boot right.
I booted to Point and EVERYTHING WORKED! :Yahoo!:
I'm not sure what fixed it, but I really appreciate all of the help everyone gave me!

Thanks to ALL!

I wish I could buy you all a beer!

Hmm, really strange symptom and really strange fix as well. Looks like your old video card was the problem.

I disagree. I don't see how a video card (hardware) can make the wrong icon (software) show up on the screen. My guess is that by removing the preference files, reinstalling mate, and changing the video driver Linux was forced to get new copies of the icon files, which corrected the issue...but as I said before, I am still new to Linux.

If it ever happens again, I would be more than willing to let you remote in.
