Synaptic won't launch from menu (Solved by workaround)

Synaptic won't launch from menu (Solved by workaround)

Postby mixebox » 21 Mar 2013, 21:31

Hi Pry

I can't get synaptic to launch from System>Administration>Synaptic Package Manager. The "Granting Rights" dialog isn't coming up. Synaptic runs OK from the terminal using "sudo synaptic-pkexec". Update Manager shows the "Granting Rights" dialog OK. Any ideas how to fix this?

It's a core install on a Inspiron 1526 laptop.

I've just made a clean 13.02 Core i386 install in a VM and everything works just fine so it looks like you've broken something accidentally. I only can do blind guess here.
Try doing these things first.
Code: Select all
sudo apt-get clean
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install --reinstall synaptic

Synaptic starts from terminal, but try to do the following thing anyway:
Code: Select all
sudo apt-get -f install

Have you seen what's in the Synaptic launcher's properties? (System>Preferences>Main Menu)

Is there any output Synaptic produces when you launch it from Terminal?

Yet, try running 'synaptic-pkexec' without sudo in Terminal, cause it is launched without sudo from the menu.

I have no entry for System>Preferences>Main Menu

When I run from terminal:

mike@pointlinux:~$ sudo synaptic-pkexec

(synaptic:4188): Gtk-WARNING **: Error loading theme icon 'view-refresh' for stock: Error opening file: No such file or directory

(synaptic:4188): Gtk-WARNING **: Error loading theme icon 'edit-find' for stock: Error opening file: No such file or directory

(synaptic:4188): Gtk-WARNING **: Error loading theme icon 'dialog-information' for stock: Error opening file: No such file or directory

(synaptic:4188): Gtk-WARNING **: Error loading theme icon 'view-refresh' for stock: Error opening file: No such file or directory

(synaptic:4188): Gtk-WARNING **: Error loading theme icon 'edit-find' for stock: Error opening file: No such file or directory

(synaptic:4188): Gtk-WARNING **: Error loading theme icon 'edit-find' for stock: Error opening file: No such file or directory

but this is hidden and synaptic works OK.

When running synaptic-pkexec in the terminal:

Error executing command as another user: Not authorized

This incident has been reported.

My launcher properties showed synaptic running as an application with the command synaptic-pkexec.

Just for yucks in the launcher properties, I changed Type to "Application in Terminal"

Now, from the launcher, I get :

==== AUTHENTICATING FOR com.ubuntu.pkexec.synaptic ===
Authentication is required to run the Synaptic Package Manager
Authenticating as: mike,,, (mike)
Password:
==== AUTHENTICATION COMPLETE ===

From the terminal, I now get:
mike@pointlinux:~$ synaptic-pkexec
==== AUTHENTICATING FOR com.ubuntu.pkexec.synaptic ===
Authentication is required to run the Synaptic Package Manager
Authenticating as: mike,,, (mike)
Password:
==== AUTHENTICATION COMPLETE ===

This is all good for me. I'm still not sure why it was doing what it was. I did install some themes and maybe something happened there.

Thanks for your help.
