Installation of cairo-dock [SOLVED]

Installation of cairo-dock [SOLVED]

Postby peixe80 » 12 Nov 2013, 21:05

When I try to install cairo-dock, Synaptic tells me:

Code: Select all
To be removed
mate-desktop-gnome

Should I continue with the installation? Is mate-desktop-gnome not an important package in Mate Desktop?

Thank you very much!!

of course, go on and write your impressions  . it would be very informative  .
but seriously. mate-desktop-gnome is a set of libraries. and it must be in conflict in something from cairo dependencies. moreover it is needed for some mate elements (mate is fork of gnome2 and probable not all elements were ported). think, that if you uninstall mate-desktop-gnome all mate will be autoremoved.

but on the other hand experiments are basis =@ for knowledge.

I have had cairo dock running from day one of my installation of Point Linux (64 bit full). See picture below:

I checked and mate-desktop-gnome is not installed and I have used every part of this OS
so it must run just fine without it.

That's my 2 ¢

ok. sorry for a little misleading :( . cairo dock might be installed however mate-desktop-gnome is in conflict with gnome-desktop-data (I suppose). mate needs gnome libraries so one of them must be installed. I have the first package, some of you have the second one. interesting why. and what is influence on the system?
cairo dock looks nice but all its functions can be fulfilled by mate panel. am I wrong??

You are right! It's just a matter of personal choice, and I like the dock which I've used since Ubuntu Hardy 8.04

Hi and thanks all! :-D

I tried to install cairo-dock (removing mate-desktop-gnome) and I checked that everything was fine :) However, I finally removed cairo-dock, reinstalled mate-desktop-gnome and installed docky, wich doesn't conflict with any Point Linux package. My goal is to achieve a look similar to Funduntu and I think this is also possible with docky.

I have learned with these tests. Thank you!

Yes, what a pity! :( But with Mate Desktop I think I can get something similar :) Funduntu successors are already in another thing, working for OpenSUSE...
