Missing "WLAN0"

Missing "WLAN0"

Postby jenom » 20 Mar 2016, 00:27

My Lenovo laptop has an Intel Pro 4965 Wifi adapter, here is the "lspci" detecttion:
03:00.0 Network controller: Intel Corporation PRO/Wireless 4965 AG or AGN [Kedron] Network Connection (rev 61)
so installed with synaptic the "firmware-iwlwifi" kernel module, which is a correct one for this adapter.
Then "modprobe -a iwlwifi"........no complaints !

however,
root@pointlinux:/home/user# iwconfig wlan0
wlan0 No such device

and
root@pointlinux:/home/user# lsmod |grep iwlwifi
iwlwifi 87219 0
cfg80211 350041 4 iwl4965,iwlwifi,iwlegacy,mac80211

the wired ethernet is working
ifconfig -a
eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:1e:37:82:ac:72
inet addr:192.168.1.16 Bcast:192.168.1.255 Mask:255.255.255.0

when I go to "Prewferences" "Network Connection" ' Add" "WI-FI" "Create" "Device MAC Address " box is empty.......no adapter detected !!!

Any advise will be appreciated !
Thanks!

I am no expert but I did look at Synaptic for network software. Check if all of these are installed:

libproxy1-plugin-networkmanager
libkio5
libntrack0
network-manager-gnome
network-manager
libnm-util2
libnm-glib4
libnm-gtk-common
libnm-gtk0

If those are all installed correctly then type in "wireless drivers". Everything there should be installed except ndisgtk and linux-wlan-ng. The first one you could install if you need windows wireless drivers.
ndisgtk is a GTK+ based frontend for ndiswrapper, allowing an easy way to install Windows wireless drivers.

The second one is for prism cards, it that is what you have in your computer.
linux-wlan-ng is a utilities for wireless prism2 cards.

I hope you can get the wireless going. You could also try just typing in "wireless". There is a lot of firmware there for different cards. Much is installed but maybe your card is missing.

Hopefully that helps or someone with more knowledge than me will post to assist you. If you need to know what firmware is installed by default e-mail me and I will copy and paste it to an e-mail back to you.

Unfortunately this forum is rather inactive, but the global moderators do check in now and then and could help you more than myself, so have some patience. Point is a great OS if you can get it working correctly.

Also check that the Package:

Binary firmware for Intel Wireless cards
firmware-iwlwifi
- Binary firmware for Intel Wireless cards is installed.
It includes " * Intel Wireless 4965 firmware, version 228.61.2.24
(iwlwifi-4965-2.ucode)" which is your wireless card.

is installed under "wireless firmware".

You might want to mark for complete removal and then reinstall the firmware if it is there.

You could also try Wicd, but I have never had much luck with Wicd finding my network.

looks like "UNCLAIMED" means no driver installed
so started collecting "firmware-iwlwifi" packages and install them with modprobe

Glad you got your wireless working.

Driver should have been installed by default, but it was still missing. Did the live CD/USB wireless work before you installed Point? Did you hash the ISO? Maybe the download failed for your driver?

Point is a great Debian-Mate distro. I do wish the forum was more active.

negative, still not working
the problem is that Intel Pro WiFi adapter is "UNCLAIMED
all my driver module installs with modprobe did not resulted any positive outcome

the problem is here:

dmesg | grep iwl
